Kwikset & Weiser Brand "Smart Key" Type Locks
Smart Key = Dumb Lock
"Smart Key", a smart idea we're sure at it's inception but this design is not without it's faults.
The ability to rekey your own locks, without the services of a Locksmith sounds appealing, and it would be if the lockset was more reliable.
The construction of this type of lock includes both, lock pins and lock wafers that work in conjunction with a sidebar. One design flaw we
have seen is where one of the wafers in the lock has fallen out of place, jamming the lock, and causing the correct key to stop functioning.
If you are considering installing a "Smart Key" lock on your door you should really look at a standard pin-tumbler type lock.
In the past month alone we have
responded to no less than 5 calls where the homeowner has been locked out by a Kwikset or Weiser "Smart Key" type deadbolt.
We have found recently, that in every instance, the lock has somehow
rekeyed itself leaving the home owner locked out of their own premises.
"Smart Key" locks
can be picked, however, if one of the wafers becomes dislocated and falls within the lock assembly, the only option is to destroy the lock
by drilling it off the door to gain entry.
A great cost effective idea for the Landlord had it worked as claimed, however, this product should have had more research & development before being brought to market.
